The Harman Clinic “Pretty in Pink”

“Think Pink for Practice Refurb” is the title of an article in the current Dental Tribune Magazine for Dentists.

Commercial Interior Designers Lima Europe suggested that a mid to light pink would be an ideal colour for a dentist surgery because the colour is both “charming” and has a tranquilising effect” helping patients to relax. A great choice for nervous patients visiting the dentist. The article does go on to warn of the dangers of Hot Pinks or Cerise as it may increase the patient heart rate and respiration.

We picked pink at the Harman Clinic because it was fun and a refreshing change from the acres of mint and aqua associated with current dental surgeries. In reception we have softened the bright pinks with the use of “Walnut”, a greyish chocolate/pink and the use of natural wood. We wanted our environment to feel warm and welcoming. However in our surgery we felt it was important to balance warmth with a clinically clean feel. Our cabinet tops and flooring are white so we can see our surgery is spotless, but we have softened the stark feel on the walls with the use of the same walnut colour we used in reception. Instead of a hot pink we have used a darker aubergine colour on our chairs and cabinet doors. All our surgery lighting is colour corrected and we have wonderful large windows providing floods of natural daylight like the artists studios of the nineteenth century, giving us the ideal artistic working conditions.

Welcome to the Harman Clinic - a refreshing change

“Componeers” – The Ready-to-Wear collection from The Harman Clinic

Smile Makeover Introductory Offer £2995 - 40% off until 1 Nov 2011

Created in Switzerland & brought to the UK by Dr Oliver Harman

Do you hate your smile but think you can’t afford a Harman makeover then think again!

For a very limited time Dr Harman is offering “Componeers” for the amazing introductory price of £2995 for eight veneers and professional tray whitening a 40% reduction on the guide price of £5015.

”Componeers” from Switzerland are the very latest in cutting edge dental products bridging the gap between minimally invasive composite bonding and porcelain veneers and has the added benefit of being faster to fit so a smile makeover can be done in just one appointment.

With “Componeers”, quality aesthetic restoration of anterior teeth can be performed efficiently in just a single session. Until now the dentist could only choose between a directly modeled composite restoration and elaborate indirect veneer technology. The Direct Composite Veneer System adds a new and interesting dimension to existing treatment options and gives dentists and patients new economic perspectives. Patients can be given a naturally aesthetic smile in just a single session.

The pre-shaped “Componeer” veneers are available in different sizes and are easy to use for single-tooth reconstruction as well as complete reconstruction in the anterior region. Time consuming forming of the anatomical shape and surface and elaborate trimming are no longer required. However “Componeers” can be customised to individual requirements with composite bonding at any time.

·      Beautiful teeth in 1 appointment

·      Minimally invasive removal of healthy tooth substance: Ultrathin at as little as 0.3 mm means that minimal or no real tooth has to be removed. Often no injections are required!

·      Reduced treatment stress for nervous patients – Fitting “Componeers” typically takes about 65% of the time composite bonding takes leading to shorter less tiring appointments

·      Fully Customisable for a natural individual look

·      Modifiable & Repairable result so if they chip or break they can be repaired or if you decide you want to change the look they can be altered later on.

·      High Surface & Edge Quality- greatly reduced staining compared to traditional bonding

·      Bleach tooth shades available unlike other systems.

·      Economical - Compared to indirect porcelain solutions they are typically about half the cost

American Dentistry no longer the best?

Interesting week - Monday saw one of my patients who currently lives in New York fly all the way back to Tunbridge Wells to get me to explain what the dentist in New York wanted to do for him. He was reassured by his American colleagues in New York that it was the norm for the dentist to run between three or four dental chairs having a quick look and leaving you for 10 or 15 minutes at a time twiddling your thumbs. Despite constantly asking for a clear explanation of what was proposed to treat his advancing gum disease, after seven visits, all he had been told was he was going to have several teeth out and some implants. No discussion about alternative treatments, what the long-term plan was, what it was all going to cost.

It was quite clear while US technical dentistry might be at the forefront of modern dentistry their customer service and communication skills are not.

At the Harman Clinic our patients enjoy excellent and clear communication. Our patients have a lengthy smile consultation as well as a comprehensive assessment of their teeth. We use individual Photo-simulations (not stock smiles) to show each patient what is possible and indeed what is not, using the latest techniques in cosmetic dentistry. My aim is for my patient and I to be 95% clear of what we want to achieve before we even begin. Then we have a unique development process to ensure that we can fulfill their expectations. I measure success for my patients not just in giving them a beautiful smile but also in achieving the “Wow” factor. They can’t help smiling.

My New York patient said he understood more in 5 minutes of talking to my nurse and myself than he had in seven visits in New York and he will be having his treatment done by us even though it is a 9 hour + commute!

White Fillings: Real Tooth or Lump of Chewing Gum

Do your white fillings actually look like real teeth?

(Part of our Excellence in Dentistry Series)

At the Harman Clinic we follow meticulous attention to detail to give you beautiful long lasting restorations of your natural teeth.

1.     The old metal or composite filling is carefully removed with lots of water to keep the tooth cool and avoid the release of toxic mercury vapour.

2.     Any decay is removed and the tooth checked with a special dye called “Seek.”  You would be amazed how often dentists miss decay in the corners without this step.

3.     The tooth is then cleaned with the air polisher to remove any stains- a crucial step in restoring the natural look of the tooth but rarely if ever done by dentists.

4.     The tooth is then built up layer by layer using two types of filling material. The first to match the inner part of the tooth – the dentine and the second the outer layer – the enamel. This way light travels through the filling just like a natural tooth.

5.     The Surface is carefully sculpted to match the rest of the tooth making it look real aswell as ensuring it functions correctly with the other teeth.

6.     Finally highlight and lowlight tints are added to further blend the filling in to the surrounding tooth.

The final outcome is a true restoration of the tooth rather than just filling up the cavity with a lump of yellowy white filler.

The Harman Clinic’s 10 Top Tips for a Great Smile

1. Prevention is better than cure. Instead of waiting for problems to develop, visit your dentist and hygienist regularly. Ask your dentist to assess your risk from decay, gum disease & bite damage (wearing away) and to recommend a personal maintenance programme for your regular visits to the dentist and hygienist.

2. Look after your teeth yourself. Brush and floss daily. If you’re not flossing, you’re not cleaning your teeth! Ask your hygienist for a personalised home care programme. Not flossing is like showering without cleaning your armpits!

3. Cut down on sugary snacks, citrus fruits and juices and fizzy drinks – even diet ones. It is not how much sugar you eat but how often you have it that will increase the amount of tooth decay you get.

4. Get teeth straightened (in teens if possible).

5. It’s never too late to straighten healthy teeth. Nowadays there are many faster, less visible brace options available for adults such as the Inman Aligner, Six-Months-Smiles and Incognito.

6. Wear a retainer for life- teeth move. it’s normal

7. Be aware of night-time tooth grinding habits – Ask your dentist to make you a night guard to protect your teeth if you do grind your teeth

8. Whiten your teeth (check with your dentist that it is safe for your teeth and avoid potentially dangerous online products or illegal shopping centre whitening booths.

9. Treat aesthetic problems conservatively with bonding or minimal preparation veneers

10. If you need to have a tooth out, make sure it is done carefully to preserve surrounding bone so it can be replaced with an implant retained crown if you need it.
